A living room with an echo, an uncomfortable space for video calls or a feature wall behind the sofa: acoustic panels can serve several purposes. Start by deciding whether you want better sound inside the room or less noise passing through a wall.
Echo and neighbour noise are different problems
Sound absorption acts on reflections within a room. Sound insulation concerns transmission between spaces. They require different solutions.
The key distinction: decorative absorbing panels do not replace a sound insulation system. For neighbour noise, traffic or vibration, first identify the source and how the sound travels.

Compare panel sizes and thicknesses

Total thickness alone does not tell you how many decibels a panel will reduce. The absorbent material, mounting method, coverage and room all matter. If a precise performance is required, request test data for the specific product and installation method.
Work out how many panels you need
A rectangular 2.40 × 0.60 m panel has a nominal area of 1.44 m². Five vertical panels would theoretically cover a wall 3 m wide and 2.40 m high.
- Measure width and height in several places.
- Mark sockets, openings, skirting boards and cuts on a drawing.
- Choose the orientation and check usable product dimensions.
- Adjust quantities for cuts and pack sizes.
This calculation helps plan an order; it does not predict acoustic performance. Use a cutting plan instead of adding an arbitrary allowance.
Choose a finish in your room’s lighting
Light oak, walnut and matt black create different contrasts with flooring and furniture. Compare the finish in daylight and under evening lighting. If a sample is available for the chosen reference, it can help you decide.
Sketch the area behind the sofa or television before ordering. In an office, leave room for sockets and equipment. A styled photograph alone cannot show how the finish will look in your space.
Prepare for the right installation method
The surface should be sound, dry, clean and sufficiently level. Follow the product instructions for compatible adhesive, fixings or any specified mounting system. Do not assume that screws or adhesive are included.
Plan tools, cuts and suitable protective equipment. Keep ventilation and maintenance access clear. Have cables, sockets and uncertain surfaces checked before work.
